OUR MISSION: SWANA is an organization of professionals committed to advancing from solid waste management to resource management through a shared emphasis on education, advocacy, and research.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Applications are now available for SWANA Central California Sierra Chapter’s Richard H. Townley Scholarships and SWANA’s Grant H. Flint International Scholarships. Sierra Chapter will award at least two scholarships in amounts ranging from $500 to $1,000 based on the number of applicants and their qualifications. Sierra Chapter will also nominate one applicant in each category to receive SWANA’s Grant H. Flint International Scholarships and Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP

R.H. Townley

Sierra Chapter’s Scholarship application process is integrated with SWANA International’s Category I, Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program, therefore, one application is used for both. An applicant can be awarded the R. H. Townley scholarship then be nominated for the Grant H. Flint International Scholarship awarded by SWANA.

 

SCHOLARSHIP

Category I – Grant H. Flint International​

The Category I Grant H. Flint International Scholarship ($5,000) is awarded to applicants who will be graduating from high school and attending their first year of college. Applications are submitted to Sierra Chapter for review then nominations are sent to SWANA by the Chapter. SWANA may award up to three scholarships.

 

SCHOLARSHIP

Category II – Grant H. Flint International

The Category II Grant H. Flint International Scholarship ($5,000) is awarded to applicants who will be entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate studies pursuing a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, engineering or a major applicable to the field of solid waste or resource management. Applications are submitted to Sierra Chapter for review.

SCHOLARSHIP

Robert P Stearns/SCS Engineers ​

The Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship (worth up to $5,000) is awarded to applicants who are full-time students entering or already in graduate school for the period of time the scholarship will be used pursuing a degree in environmental science, environmental studies, engineering or other major applicable to the field of solid waste or resource management.

SCHOLARSHIP

Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship

The new scholarship of $5,000 a year is funded by a generous donation from Harvey Gershman. Named for a co-founder and owner of Gershman, Brickner, & Bratton, Inc., (GBB), this scholarship is awarded to full-time university students pursuing a degree in studies applicable to the field of solid waste or resource management and intending to seek employment in the industry. Students from Northeastern University are particularly encouraged to apply, but all Category II scholarship applicants may also be considered for this prestigious award. SWANA will manage the scholarship as part of its annual Grant H. Flint International Scholarship program.
